Staff Capabilities

Transform Learning, Teaching and Assessment by Developing Staff Capabilities

Stream 2 seeks to develop staff capabilities in teaching, learning and assessment using a sustainable education framework. It aims to reform academic programme provision through flexible and innovative approaches that address the social and economic needs of the regions and through development and implementation of a sustainable higher education curriculum framework across the sector.

The work packages in Stream 2 will enable all institutions to make a step change in the development of staff capability to support a transformation in learning, teaching, and assessment based on a sustainable higher education curriculum framework. They will ensure the embedding of principles and training aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Work Package 2.1 – Sectoral level support of the development of staff capabilities within a sustainable higher education framework

The focus of the Develop Staff Capabilities using a Sustainable Higher Education Framework Work Package is the establishment of a sector-wide Sustainable Higher Education Steering group.

This will create a Sustainable Community of Practice (COP) which will be tasked with informing and supporting the development of staff capabilities across the Technological University sector. A central remit of the COP will be to establish the principles and values which underpin curriculum transformation, resilience, and sustainability within higher education.

The work package will foster a collaborative approach to staff development through engagement with students, staff and regional & enterprise representation. The Sustainable Higher Education Steering group will focus on key areas such as inclusive approaches to curriculum design and development. It will also scope and advise on the development of a toolkit for curriculum transformation, with a view to enhancing the learning experience for all students.

The Staff Capabilities initiatives will include:

  • Sectoral Sustainable Higher Education (HE) Framework Community of Practice (COP)
  • Sustainable Futures Champions for HE
  • Toolkit to support staff
  • Digital Badging

Work Package 2.2 – Development of a transformational sustainable higher education curriculum framework.

The focus of the Develop a Curriculum Framework for Digital Transformation, Resilience and Sustainability in Higher Education Work Package is on curriculum development and enhancement to support the development of graduate capabilities for digital transformation, resilience & sustainability in Higher Education (HE). This will be achieved through the embedding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), digitally enabled content delivery and assessment within the curriculum framework.

The Curriculum Framework initiatives will include:

  • Staff workshops
  • Curriculum Framework
  • Graduate attributes
  • UDL principles

Work Package 2.3 – Developing capabilities of all staff to support transformative sustainable higher education and resilience

The focus of this work package is

Work Package is on developing the capabilities of all staff working in the Technological University sector. This will have a particular emphasis on teaching, learning & assessment and digital transformation, resilience & sustainability. A baseline of staff digital capability will be established to enable planning, coordination and recognition of staff engagement with professional development activities, both on a national and institutional level.

The Develop Capabilities initiatives will include:

  • Needs analysis
  • Staff CPD plan
  • Staff development portal
  • Recognition of CPD
